2022 MN State Fair Food Preview Part 5 (New Vendors)

Midtown Global Market’s Arepa Bar

Arepa Bar serves official new foods – arepas in three varieties, which includes Pulled Pork (pork shoulder, shredded cheddar, cabbage, carrots, green onions, parsley); The Queen (pulled chicken and avocado puree, mozzarella, arugula); and Vegan (black beans, fried sweet plantains, cabbage, carrots, green onions, parsley). Plus, Papelón con Limón, a cold beverage made with unrefined cane sugar and fresh-squeezed lime juice. (Aug. 31-Sept. 5 only)

Sarah

Oh, okay. Now we’re into the listings about the new vendors.

Some of these have new foods on the list which will make them easy to try. And I’ve also talked about them above. This is one of them.

Oh, they also have a drink! It sounds pretty good and refreshing. I think I’ll push for us to try it. Beverages are always an easy new food to try.

Shit. We’re gonna be spending so much money this year.

Patrick

I think typically we don’t necessarily count New Vendors as places we have to try by default.  Certainly if they have foods on the new food list, then we’ll hit them up, but I’m pretty sure in past years, we haven’t made them a priority or even a necessity.  That said, I will briefly list the list of new vendors, and you can do what you want with this info.

In addition to the arepas listed above, they appear to have a Papelon con Limon drink, which is a cold beverage made with unrefined cane sugar and fresh-squeeze lime juice.  Might give that at try, mostly because it is just a drink.

Anne

Hey that fancy lime drink sounds good- Papelon con Limon- sugar and lime juice. Sign me up. Otherwise just the arepas already listed above.

Wait- is that the lime drink in the fuzzy, too close picture?? That’s not what I would expect at all. Now I’m curious/concerned

Bridge n’ Barrel Root Beer

Bridge n’ Barrel Root Beer serves Lift Bridge Root Beer, Lift Bridge Black Cherry Soda, pink lemonade and assorted other sodas. Its two locations are: on the north side of Dan Patch Avenue between Nelson and Underwood streets; and on the northwest corner of Carnes Avenue and Underwood Street.

Sarah

Okay, so they just sell Lift Bridge sodas? Fine.

I mean, I use their root beer when I make my most best roasted chicken, so I’m happy for them. But I’ve had better root beer and don’t feel the need to try their other drinks, tbh.

Patrick

Just a drink stand, it looks like, with lift bridge root beers and sodas.  Don’t think I really need to visit this.

Anne

Lift Bridge Root Beer and Black Cherry Soda (plus others). Ok- I like rootbeer, and I like a non-alcoholic bev vendor. But also NBD and almost doesn’t seem worth mentioning here?

The Herbivorous Butcher

The Herbivorous Butcher serves the official new food Two Vegan Entrees - Poultrygeist (fried chicken topped with sausage gravy and french fried onions on buttery Texas toast) and Steak-xorcist (chicken fried steak topped with sausage gravy and french fried onions on buttery Texas toast). Plus, Monster Mash combines Poultrygeist and Steak-xorcist in the same boat.

Sarah

Oh hey! They have a monster mash, which combines the chicken fried chicken and the chicken fried steak in one bowl! That will solve our conundrum about which one to try! Neat!

Patrick

Monster Mash?!  Holy shit, I need to go edit my original post!

Anne

I know Sarah and Packie are all over that Monster Mash but sweet jesus guys- we have at least 40 new foods to try!! Maybe we can give ourselves a break here and just get one??!

Nautical Bowls

Nautical Bowls serves four fresh superfood bowls: Anchor Bowl (açaí, granola, banana, coconut flakes, cashew cacao butter); Nauti Bowl (açaí, pitaya, granola, banana, cacao nibs, peanut butter); Paddle Bowl (Blue Majik, mango, coconut, granola, strawberries, coconut flakes, honey); and Sunset Bowl (ube, blood orange, granola, blueberries, coconut flakes, honey). All are organic, gluten- and dairy-free, plant-based and without refined sugar. Ingredients are organic, gluten-free, dairy-free, plant-based, and contain zero refined sugars.

Sarah

Okay, here’s a new vendor without an official new food. Let’s take a look at it.

Okay, so they’re like healthy fruit bowls and stuff. I can get behind this. Especially on a hot day when you just really don’t want anymore fried food or whatever. All of them sound pretty good. I’d have a hard time picking one. We’ll have to see what we’re feeling like in the moment, I think.

I wonder how big they are? I hope they’re not huge. Really, I want them to be more like nautical cups than nautical bowls…

Patrick

A little interesting that this is featured as a new vendor, but they aren’t on the new foods list.  Guess they ran out of room for that vegan corn dog.  Their Nautical bowls appear to be bowls of “fresh superfood” and are said to be organic, gluten- and dairy-free, plant based and without refined sugar.  A nice offering for the rare State Fair goer who isn’t fist deep in a sweet martha’s bucket with a turkey leg in the other hand, but not really my thing.

Anne

So are these just like granola/fruit bowls? But organic, GF, plant-based (is there a difference between vegan and plant-based?), dairy free, free of refined sugar (what’s a refined sugar? Don’t all sugars go through a refinery so you’re not serving up like an entire beet?)

These both look tasty but also something that I would not get. Feels like it insists upon itself.

Rick’s Pizza

Rick’s Pizza serves official new food Pickle Pizza (hand-tossed homemade pizza dough topped with homemade specialty dill ranch sauce, fresh mozzarella and crunchy dill pickles, and finished with dill weed seasoning), plus cheese, pepperoni and sausage pizza and assorted beverages.

Sarah

I don’t go to the fair for pizza. Just being honest here.

But, hey, if they want to get behind making wacky pizzas for new foods? THAT I can support and get behind. So, I hope they keep running with that plan, otherwise I don’t think I’ll ever eat here again.

Patrick

Pickle RIIIIIIIICK!  Come on man.  You blew it.

Anne

Looks like just some regular pizzas to go along with their Pickle Pizza.

Soul Bowl

Soul Bowl serves official new food Soulsicle (fried chicken on-a-stick topped with candied yam sauce, cornbread crumble, mac-and-cheese seasoned cheddar cheese, hot sauce and green onions), plus Donut Peach Cobbler (yeast-raised donut topped with peach cobbler filling and cookie crumbles) and Queen B Lemonade (blueberry lavender lemonade).

Sarah

All right, let’s see what else Soul Bowl is selling.

Oh, a cobbler and a lemonade.

Hm. Is it weird that they only have three things and only one of those things is actually in a bowl?

I think so, yes. I’m not sure how I feel about that picture of the cobbler, either. It’s all sort of one, uniform color. Not typically my jam. But that doesn’t mean it won’t be good.

Maybe we’ll try it if the soulsicle proves it’s worth.

Patrick

Home of the soulsicle listed above, they appear to also have a Donut Peach Cobbler, where they top a yeast-raised donut with peach cobbler filling and cookie crumbles.  Oh, and they also have a blueberry lavender lemonade.  Yeah, nice try Soul Bowl.  Farmer’s Union already tried that and we know how that went.  It went bad, just like their jalapeno lemonade with all its fucking pulp!

Anne

Donut Peach Cobbler sounds good, but damn that pic isn’t doing it any favors. I’m also terrible at food photography but I’m also not trying to show millions of people my food so they’ll buy it…

The lemonade sounds good too.

Union Hmong Kitchen

Union Hmong Kitchen serves official new foods Dej Qab Zib (Sweet Refreshment), a coconut lychee colada made with a blend of coconut milk, lychee syrup, lime and mint, served over ice (vegan); and Mov + Nqaij (Rice + Meat) – purple sticky rice with choice of sauce, including Krunchy Chili Oil (dried Thai chilis, garlic, shallots), Lemongrass Scallion Dressing (lemongrass, ginger, garlic, shallots), and Tiger Bite (Thai chilis, garlic, shallots, cilantro, fish sauce, oyster sauce, lime juice); plus, choice of skewered and grilled meat, including Hmong Sausage (house-made coarse-ground pork sausage link with Krunchy Chili Oil), Hilltribe Chicken Thigh (ginger, lemongrass), or Lemongrass Turmeric Tofu (marinated in a lemongrass and turmeric blend). (All items gluten-free; vegan options available)

Sarah

Already talked about how great this is gonna be and I’m so glad it’s an official vendor. I hope they last forever and make amazing, delicious foods for everyone.

Patrick

Nothing that wasn’t already covered above.

Anne

Nothing to add- see previous review

Waffle Chix

Waffle Chix serves Brownie Waffle Stick, Chicken in a Waffle On-A-Stick, Breakfast Sausage in a Waffle On-A-Stick and assorted sodas.

Sarah

Whoa whoa whoa! What do we have here and why wasn’t one of these an official new food? Because they clearly should be!

Oh my god. Look at these options! Brownie waffle? Chicken in a waffle? Breakfast in a waffle?

Shut up right now and take all my money!

I want to try every single one of these!

You know what? I’m gonna. No one’s stopping me. I’ve got at least 3-4 days at the fair. I can do it. It’s gonna happen.

Okay, wait. I guess if I try one and it’s terrible then I reserve the right to bunny out on the other two. But otherwise, I’m gonna get this done, so help me.

Patrick

Again, not sure why this new vendor didn’t also feature a new food, but whatever.  Looks like they offer three varieties of stuffed waffles on a stick; brownie, chicken, and breakfast sausage.  Hmm, I might give one of these a try and see how it is.

Anne

Oh ho- someone giving Nordic Waffle a run?

Hey these look pretty good- I wonder why they didn’t get a new food, just a new vendor. I wish I had a better understanding of the new food process…

Def want to try that Chicken and Waffle, and then the Brownie waffle stick

WE DID IT!

We got through all eleventy-billion new foods and vendors!

And now we’re in the MNSF limbo, where we’re just waiting for the fair to get here (33 days and counting baby!)

Hope the time passes quickly.

See you all at the fair

2022 MN State Fair Food Preview Part 4 (Reuben Rolls through Vegan Corn Dog)

Reuben Rolls- O’Gara’s at the Fair

Corned beef, Swiss cheese and sauerkraut hand-rolled in an egg roll wrapper, deep-fried and served with a side of O’Gara’s homemade Thousand Island dressing.

Sarah

Dammit. I see O’Gara’s is back this year with an offering.

(sighs for ten years)

They’ve never once done anything we’ve scored highly. If we’re lucky, this will be just okay.

But it could be garbage, too.

I’m not a big Reuben fan, either, so that’s not helping things.

I do like how it’s pretty much just like an eggroll. So maybe… Maaaaaaybe…that will work in its favor.

I’m tentatively…well, not excited about this, but maybe tentatively not angry about it.

Yeah, that sounds about right.

Mostly this just tells me that I want other kinds of egg rolls. People need to steal this idea from O’Gara’s and do better things with it.

Like, shit, hear me out on this…why hasn’t anyone done a S’more’s eggroll before?

Jesus. JFC.

Did I just invent a new food for the State Fair???

Shit. I need to trademark this or something!

Patrick

Aw hell, they’re back.  I was hoping after being a no-show on this list last year that they’d given up and done the honorable thing and stopped trying.  The kind of honor that some places will never have (*cough* Hideaway Shiteasy *cough*).  But hey, something can be said for tenacity, right?  Yeah, something bad.  Here’s O’Gara’s deal, they put something out and you say “hey, that looks like it might be alright, I’ll give it a taste”.  I could get behind a Reuben eggroll, and it sounds like a fun variation on the sandwich, even including the thousand island dressing a dip.  But it won’t be good.  Their new food is never good.  It might be ok, it might even get a C, but it has been eight years since they’ve broken the mold and gotten a B.  I tend to believe they’ll follow their typical trend and most of this will end up in the trash.  To be fair, a lot of the food we try ends up in the trash, we LITERALLY would die if we tried eating and finishing forty plus foods in a single day.  Sorry about the food waste but come one…the vendor has to take some of the blame.

Anne

Uuuughhhhh. Just get out of here O’Gara’s. Go on, git!

I do not like Reubens- because I do not like sauerkraut.

Maybe stuffing it in an egg roll wrapper and deep frying it will help?

Of course, if O’Gara’s history tells us anything, it will not.

Idk man

What are we even doing here…

Soulsicle- Soul Bowl

Fried chicken on-a-stick topped with candied yam sauce, cornbread crumble, mac-and-cheese seasoned cheddar cheese, hot sauce and green onions. (New Vendor)

Sarah

Jesus how can I still have 17 more entries to get through?

Are we going to die this year? I think…I think we might actually die…

Anyway, onto soulsicle. What is it? No idea. Time to find out.

A new vendor. Hmmm.

Okay, like I like the sound of SOME of this, but I’m not crazy about that picture. I don’t want, like, random pieces of shredded cheddar on my stuff. Melt that shit.

But otherwise, all right. This sounds interesting. I do like fried chicken. Like a lot. Will this be boneless? If not, it’s gonna be reaaal hard to eat this.

Nothing about this (other than the pieces of shredded cheese) really offends me, so I’ll say tentatively looking forward to this. All it will really take is for the fried chicken to be good for this to be a winning item.

Come on, new vendor Soul Bowl. I’m rooting for you!

Patrick

Here we are with ANOTHER new vendor.  Calm down State Fair, damn.  Looks like they’re bringing us the Soulsicle, which is just…wow, there is a lot going on here.  I’m gonna be up front and say this should NOT be on a stick.  Look at that thing.  If half of the food would fall off it you pick it up by the stick, it shouldn’t be on a stick.  Period.  OK, that pet peeve aside, this looks intriguing.  Pretty sure the hot sauce ruins it for the twins, but I like a little tangy heat so I’m good there.  That chicken looks nicely breaded and crispy, and a candied yam sauce?  Ooo-wee, I’ll give that a try.  And sure, throw some cornbread crumble in there for a little more sweet and texture.  I assume those orange sticks are the mac-and-cheese seasoned cheddar cheese, though I’m not sure how you season a cheese with…cheese?  I think this will either by amazing, or just be way too many components that don’t all come together and make it a mess.  Thank god I have my own fork, because I am not holding this thing by the damn stick.

Anne

Ok this has to be another new food vendor too.

Oh! This one does say it’s a new vendor. Did the other ones say that too and I just missed it??

(turns out yes they do. I am dumb)

Another one in the Food Building. Man- did we lose a bunch of vendors in there?

I feel like I can tell this is a new vendor because they felt compelled to put their item on a stick but then made it so it can’t be eaten on the stick by plopping stuff on it. Like- it doesn’t HAVE to be on a stick Soul Bowl.

I don’t know how to feel about this one- it all sounds good up until the hot sauce. It LOOKS good. But I feel like I’m going to pick up the stick to take a bite and everything is going to fall off (hopefully not all over me)

Sundae Sammie- Jammy Sammies by Brim

Grilled sandwich with cinnamon bread, Minnesota strawberry jam, vanilla cream, fresh strawberries, whipped cream, toasted peanuts, confetti sprinkles and flaked sea salt. (Gluten-free and vegan options available)

Sarah

YES!!! YES!!!!

GET THE HELL OUT OF MY WAY I NEED THIS FIRST!

Oh my gooooooooooood…

It has nuts! I LOVE nuts on things, especially if those things are ICE CREAM!

It has flakes of sea salt! I LOVE flakes of sea salt if it’s sprinkled on sweet things!

LOOK AT THIS GLORIOUS BEAST OF PERFECTION!

God I’m so excited for this.

Oh, it’s at Brim? Or, wait, is jammy sammies, like, another location sponsored by Brim? Do they have more than this Sammy? I’m confused. I don’t like being confused.

You know what? I don’t care. Look at this thing. LOOK AT IT AND SWOON!

It’s a grilled ice cream sammich! What else could I want out of life?

Even Packie has to be excited about this, right? I mean, come on…

This might be my most excited for offering…

Patrick

Hey, look who’s back!  Brim arrived on the scene in 2019 with a killer PB&J sammich and after a no show last year on the new foods list, it seems they’ve tossed their hat in the ring again with another new sammich confection.  Were they always called Jammy Sammies by Brim?  Is this a new stand also owned by Brim?  Not sure, guess we’ll find out.  Here they have a Sundae Sammie which…wow, I LOVE how creative and technologically impressive this sandwich sounds.  How do they grill the sandwich without melting the whipped cream?  Do they grill the bread and then make the sandwich?  Is it all going to melt into a mess in my hands?  I hope not, because this sandwich has a lot going on that I think will taste great.  Jam, cream, strawberries, effing toasted peanuts…sea salt?!  This has to be good, it just has too.  Really excited to find out on this one.

Anne

Ok is it weird that Brim has like a Jammy Sammies spinoff?

Well it doesn’t matter because this looks HELLA GOOD. Oh jesus get in my mouth

I feel like smiling and crying at the same time because I just love this thing so much.

TELL IT THAT I LOVE IT

C’mon Brim- now’s your time to make the A list.

God I hope this is good. Please be good.

Sweet Cheese Blintz- iPierogi

Soft baked crepe filled with sweet vanilla-flavored cream cheese and sprinkled with powdered sugar.

Sarah

I honestly don’t think I’ve ever had a blintz in my life, so I guess that changes in a few weeks.

Aww. When I glanced at this, I thought it said Swiss Cheese Blintz and I’m not gonna lie, I love Swiss cheese and was pretty excited.

But it turns out it’s sweet cheese. And, I mean, I love cream cheese that’s all sweet and good, so I’m happy about this, but sad that I thought we were gonna do something interesting with Swiss cheese.

I think this will be good? Or at least I’m excited to try it. I’m slightly worried the ratio of cream cheese to crepe will be off and I’ll mostly have a mouth full of cream cheese, but who knows.

And I can’t remember how we feel about iPierogi. Obviously it didn’t blow our minds.

I’m happy we get to try this, though. I think Anne will probably be the most excited for it, I suspect.

Patrick

This place was new in 2019 and first offered a pretty tasty cabbage roll.  This year they’re trying for something sweet with a Sweet Cheese Blintz.  This looks very simple, but no less delectable.  I love a good crepe and wrapping it around some vanilla flavored cream cheese just has to be good right?  I give some places a lot of flack for putting out some basic bitch food that is just way too plain and simple to be on the new foods list, but sometimes…. sometimes simple is better, so long as you really nail your flavors.  Top Chef taught me that, and they have never come to Minnesota to host their show.  Why won’t you come here?!  Look at us!  38 new foods, dammit!  We are special, dontcha-goddamn-know!!  You fuckin’ betcha!

Anne

This thing- something about it looks so pretty. Like it looks like it has a filter on in that makes it looks soften and ethereal.

Oh for a second I thought it was vanilla ICE cream and I was like wut.

But I see it’s vanilla cream CHEESE which makes more sense.

Wow I hope this tastes as good as it looks. I love a good cheese pastry. I feel like I can already anticipate the mouth feel- I hope I’m right

Sweet Potato Poutine- The Blue Barn

Sweet potato waffle fries topped with cheese curds, Beyond chorizo sausage, turmeric gravy, pico de gallo and fresh cilantro (Vegetarian)

Sarah

Ooh, what do we have here? It’s from the Blue Barn so now I’m pretty excited.

Damn, remember how we used to hate, and I mean, HATE, the Blue Barn? And now it’s our frickin favorite? I hope that happens with the hideaway speakeasy someday, but all signs point to no frickin way.

Wait, this has chorizo? God dammit.

Why did you have to do that to me, Blue Barn? Why?

Couldn’t you have done shredded pork? Or, like, any other type of sausage? Shit, even chicken sausage?

Well, at least I’m very intrigued by the turmeric gravy.

Please be good. Please be good…

Patrick

Maaaaan, you just couldn’t quit while you were ahead, could you Blue Barn?  Or at least give us a break and stick to one new food item.  I’ll give Blue Barn the benefit of the doubt with this one, but I think we might not like this and for different reasons.  Sarah especially, but maybe Anne too, won’t like the chorizo sausage (even though I assume it is vegan with the “Beyond” label), none of us really like cilantro much, and I’m not a big fan of sweet potato fries no matter what form they come in.  Still…it’s a poutine and poutines just effing WORK, man.  That turmeric gravy looks more like badly melted cheddar cheese, though, so I’m predicting this will be on the miss list.

Anne

Ok. Well poutine doesn’t feel very fresh and exciting anymore, but don’t get me wrong- I still love it.

The Poutine Stand at the MNSF has some of the best poutine around, so let’s see what Blue Barn is trying over here.

Ah Christ, they really shit the bed here.

Chorizo sausage? Pass (ugh- Beyond Chorizo too- last time we tried vegan chorizo it got a damn F)

Turmeric gravy? Idk. It looks grainy or curdled in the pic which- do not like.

Pico- what a sloppy mess.

Why did you have to go and ruin poutine Blue Barn?

Tandoor-Fired Jerk Chicken Mini’zza- West Indies Soul Food

White chicken meat, bell pepper, onion medley, whole milk mozzarella cheese, West Indies Soul Food’s signature Jamaican Jerk Sauce and Pizza Karma’s Tikka Sauce on a mini crust.

Sarah

So, this is just a mini pizza, then?

I don’t know.

I mean, I’m glad it’s not huge, but I don’t know what this is bringing to the table. I’ve also never been overly impressed with West Indies Soul Food, even though I want them to be good.

Well, maybe this will be the time they impress me. I hope they do. I hope I bite into this mini pizza and it blows me away. I really want that for all of us.

And at least this doesn’t have chorizo on it, even if bell peppers are dumb. Though sometimes I can stand them on a pizza, so time will tell.

Patrick

God, is this list still going?  Not gonna lie, I split writing out these reviews over two days because I just stalled out halfway through on day one and needed to step away to re-center myself.  This is an effing chore.  Ok, looks like we’ve got some kind of mini-pizza here, tandoor-fried with some chicken, peppers, onions, and a Jamaican jerk sauce, and a tikka sauce?  Two sauces?  Mmkay… Not really into jerk food, I’d much prefer food that treats me nice.  Hah, but seriously, not super into jerk seasonings.  They hang out with jerk food too much and get into heaps of trouble.  Hah!  But no, yeah.  That said, seems pretty creative as far as pizza ideas, so hopefully this might taste good?  Wonder how small this pizza is, and I hope it’s not like one of those things where you get two bites and spend a ton of money.

Anne

Hey- this sounds pretty good! I hope it’s not too bell pepper forward, but I love the sound of just about everything else here. The other thing I’m giving a side-eye to is the Jamaican Jerk Sauce.

Don’t spice us out of this.

I feel like we’ve had a spice issue from this place before (did they used to be Taste of Midtown Global Market and now have their own shop?)

Tirokroketes- Dino’s Gyros

Mix of spicy feta, cream cheese and mozzarella blended with Dino’s Greek seasoning, then rolled in a gluten-free panko, deep-fried and sprinkled with lemon juice, Parmesan cheese and Dino’s seasoning. (Gluten-free, vegetarian)

Sarah

What is this? What are these? How do we pronounce them? TIRO-crow-keets? Tiro-crow-KETS? Ket-is? Tiro-CROW-ket-ees? That’s what I think I’m gonna go with.

Oh, it’s from Dino’s. Checks out. I like Dino’s in general, but I’m not usually impressed with their State Fair offerings.

I’m unsure about this one. I will say that Dino’s has a spicy feta dip that’s to DIE FOR, so if the spice feta in this is anything like that, then maybe we’re in for a treat. But I think it will come down to whether the dryness of the feta is masked by the cream and mozzarella cheese. If so, then we’ve probably got ourselves a winner, here. I mean, listen. It’s more or less a deep fried, panko cheese ball.

I don’t know about you, but that sounds pretty fine to me.

I wonder if I’m going to want a dipping sauce to go with them?

Just kidding. Of course I want a dipping sauce to go with them.

Patrick

Dino’s is usually a good bet, and they make a damn fine gyro to boot.  This had me at “spicy feta”, which if you haven’t had it, is the bomb.  Dip some pita chips into that jazz and mmmm!  This sounds like tasty combo when you add in cream cheese, mozzarella, Greek seasonings and deep fry it in some panko, hell yeah!  I’ve got a good feeling about this one and hope they keep up with their good reputation for new foods.

Anne

Heh- I like a new food I’m not sure how to pronounce.

Ugh feta- that’s shit’s so dry. At least they mixed it with cream cheese and mozz.

These sound like fun little bites.

I wonder if we will wish they had a fun dipping sauce to go with it?

Dino’s is usually a good value, and in general they tend to do things well.

Tot Dog- LuLu’s Public House

All-beef hot dog dipped in corn dog batter, rolled in a mixture of minced tater tots, cheddar cheese and onions, then deep-fried.

Sarah

Why is this a thing that no one has tried before?

Like, of course we want this. Of course this is a thing that should exist and we should eat.

Nothing about this sounds even remotely bad.

On top of it, they’re using corn dog batter, too, instead of pronto pup batter which means it should be nice and sweet instead of tasting like wet bread.

Also, this is from Lulu’s which has really surprised us the last few fairs.

I think this will be good and I want it to be spectacular.

Please be spectacular.

Patrick

LuLu’s has literally gone the last two year putting out A ranked foods.  That is like unprecedented.  Hopefully they keep up with this trend with their newest creation, the Tot Dog.  Honestly, there is nothing I don’t like about this idea.  If it’s a good corndog and you add on some crispy tater tots, cheese, and onions on the outside, I don’t see how that could hurt things.  The pic looks good and the idea sounds good, so I hope this works, because I have strong opinions on corn dogs.

Anne

Oh shit

I mean, Hey Lulu, how you doin girl?

Ok ok ok

So this is like a souped up corn dog (thank GOD they went corn dog and not pronto pup OR WE WOULD BE FIGHTING)

Holy shit this thing looks baller

Is this…is this my most anticipated food?? Am I more excited for a savory item than a sweet item?  ME??!

Tumeric Ginger Lemon Surprise- West Indies Soul Food

Fresh ginger, turmeric syrup and a dash of bitters mixed with West Indies Soul Food’s Original Caribbean Lemonade. (Gluten-free, vegan)

Sarah

I like Turmeric drinks, but usually they’re, like, golden lattes and stuff. I don’t think I’ve ever tried a turmeric cool drink before (also, I’ve never settled on how to pronounce turmeric and it’s really frustrating for me to say this word in my head while I’m typing.)

Ginger…can be hit or miss for me. Generally it’s a miss, as I don’t overly like the flavor. But sometimes it surprises me.

This sounds like it’s more or less a fancified lemonade. And I’m okay with that. I hope it’s great. I don’t know if it will be. It could be barfinade or whatever drink it was that the Farmer’s Union made last year that we had to chew.

I think it will all come down to the balance of flavors.

Patrick

Second item from West Indies Soul Food, but it’s a drink so again, I’ll not harp on them too much.  So it looks like this is a taking an existing item, the Original Caribbean Lemonade, and jazzing it up by adding fresh ginger, turmeric syrup, and a dash of bitters.  I’m curious how the original varies from a standard lemonade, but I’m not sure how these additions are going to play.  I don’t really know what turmeric syrup is gonna taste like, and ginger is a pretty powerful ingredient to add in the mix.  Will this be good, or will we have a contender for the not-so-coveted Barfonade award, the gold star standard for F-ranked foods.  Who knows, but I think we’ll find out.

Anne

Hmmmm

This looks refreshing. I like the color on it.

But I worry about this flavor combo- lemonade is sweet and tart but then they add ginger, turmeric, and bitters- all distinct flavors that I’m not too sure about.

I feel like we’ve had West Indies before but I didn’t see it on our list, so I’m not sure how they are overall.

Guess we’ll see. At least we can snag it when we get their Tandoor Pizza and don’t have to make a special trip for it.

Vegan Corn Dog- Daryl’s Dog House

Plant-based vegan hot dog hand-dipped in plant-based vegan corn dog batter and deep-fried.

Sarah

I mean, I like a corn dog. Will it be better than poncho dog? No fucking way. But I’m perfectly happy to try another corn dog, especially one that’s vegan.

Man, vegans are making out with some prime food offerings this year!

I don’t know that I have anything more to say about this…

Patrick

Ok, again, it’s nice that places are putting in some solid efforts in being accommodating to those with diet restrictions, like vegan and gluten free, etc.  Maybe they’re super stoked to have a corn dog that can chow down.  Not sure why this is impressive enough to make it to the new foods list.  It is literally just a vegan corn dog.  That’s even the name of it, they’re not trying to hype it up or pretend it’s fancy.  There is no gimmick, it’s not creative, it’s just basic.  Even if this somehow turns out to be a real killer corn dog, even if by some long shot it is better than a perfect, delicious, Poncho Dog corn dog, I don’t know how I could get excited to just be eating another corn dog.  Honestly, that this made the list is just a slap in the face.  I’m kind of upset that I have to waste my time on this.

Anne

Ok I need to do a vegan food count because this list is dang vegan forward. Did MNSF put out a call for vegan foods this year?

Ok well it’s a corn dog and not a pronto pup, so that’s a point in their favor.

I wish there was more information to go off of here. What’s the dog made of? Tell us more about why we should eat this other than the fact that it’s vegan?

Daryl’s Dog House- are they the one with the Big Dog Corndog? If so they make a good dog so I feel like this might be ok. But really hard to feel anything about this due to the lack of information to go off of.

ALLLMOST THERE!

Just 1 day to go, and it’s just the new Vendors left, so a nice, easy day to finish us off

2022 MN State Fair Food Preview Part 3 (Lemon Cookie Tortilla Chips through Pork Schnitzel Sandwich)

Lemon Cookie Tortilla Chips- Blue Moon Dine-In Theater

Lemon sandwich cookies deconstructed into four large tortilla chips made from a blend of cookies and corn, served with creamy-center-of-the-cookie cream dip topped with lemon curd.

Sarah

Huh. Huuuuuuuuh.

Gotta say, it’s nice when there’s, like, a new food invention at the fair, instead of just giving us ethnic food to wow us or, like, spins on existing foods. If you can even call a duck egg on an open faced sammich a spin on a new food, hideaway speakeasy.

Oh, I see! It’s like a deconstructed lemon sammich cookie! What’s the dip stuff? Center of the cookie cream? Hmm. I’m intrigued. Not gonna lie, kinda wish it was ice cream…

Oh shit, Lemon Curd? Anne (and our Mom) are going to lose their minds over that.

Those cookie (yes, I spelled this as coorkie originally) tortillas look pretty damn good. Gotta say, this seems like a fun entry that could be great. Let’s hope it is.

OH! It’s at Blue Moon! That makes sense! And therefore, there’s a high likelihood that this will be great, too! Their rare misses are just that: rare. And even Packie liked their banana pudding last year.

Patrick

Hmm…I’m on the fence with this one.  Blue Moon usually brings it with the deserts, sometimes even knocking it out of the park like last year’s Caramelized Banana Pudding.  This looks a little basic to me, though, but maybe they really brought the lemon flavor and made this thing pop.  I think those cookie-chips and cream dip are gonna really have some heavy lifting to do, but if anyone can pull it out, it’s Blue Moon.

Anne

Blue Moon always has our heart, even if they mis-step sometimes. They have enough As on the list to always have a warm place with us.

And hey- these sound fun! Deconstructed lemon sandwich cookie? Ok! There isn’t a single thing in this that I don’t like the sound of, and I think this will be real good.

Cookie and Corn tortilla chips? You scamp. Let’s do this

Minne Hot Hot- RC’s BBQ

Smoked Rib Tips tossed in Nashville Hot Sauce, served with Comeback Sauce.

Sarah

I’m just gonna come out and say that I don’t know what this is, yet, but I love the name.

Oh, it’s rib tips!! Nice!

Shit, wait, they’re tossed in Nashville hot sauce? Son of a bitch. I know that’s gonna be too hot for me. Why you do this to me, RC’s?

I wish the sauce was on the side, so I could taste it once, but then enjoy the rest of the rib tips without it. And no way that comeback sauce is gonna do anything to calm my mouth down.

Dammit. I really want to be excited for these.

Eh, the hell with it. I AM excited for these. I know I’ll just be sad once I taste them and ruin my palate for the rest of the day.

Patrick

Seems pretty straightforward.  Not anything particularly groundbreaking, but I do like some rib tips and add in some Nashville hot sauce, maybe this’ll be really good.  I’ve heard of comeback sauce, however I’m not a hundred percent sure if I’ve tried it before or not.  Pretty basic as far as BBQ goes, so this will really have to be done well to impress me.

Anne

Hmmmmm

This is gonna be too spicy, isn’t it?

They look really good, and I like rib tips

But it has hot in the name twice.

That has to be a warning, right?

We’ve been warned.

Minnebluberry Pie- Minneapple Pie

Handmade blueberry pie made with a crisp, flaky crust, filled with blueberries, and served with vanilla ice cream. (Vegan if served without ice cream)

Sarah

Pies everywhere. From Sara and from Minneapple.

Listen. Anne entered a blueberry pie like, two fairs ago (how many years was that? Can’t say. The pandy has really screwed my sense of time) and it was the best blueberry pie I’ve ever had, so I really don’t think this can compete with that. I’m just saying.

Also, I know people go bonkers over the minneapple pie, but when we tried it, it was no big deal. So I suspect this will be the same.

Not that it will be bad or anything. I’m sure it will be perfectly serviceable.

I am very happy, of course, that it comes a la mode.

Patrick

Not sure if I’ve actually tried something from Minneapple Pie before now, but I’ve always thought about giving it a try.  That said, there is nothing exciting or interesting about this item, it’s just pie.  Plus, Anne makes a real bitchin’ blueberry pie and it is gonna be hard to beat a ribbon winning pie.  Did she get a ribbon for entering it in fair?  Not sure, now that I think about it, but she definitely should have.  That’s some good pie, so they’re really gonna have to bring it.

Anne

Oh! I just assumed this was gonna be from Sara’s Tipsy Pies, and I was like didn’t we get blueberry last year?

So color me surprised that it’s from Minneapple Pie.

People love the apple pies from this vendor. We tried them. Thought they were just ok, nbd.

But boy howdy do we love blueberry pie in this house.

This looks perfectly fine and tasty and I’ll be happy to try it. I don’t think it’ll knock our socks off.

How is pie crust vegan though- vegan butter I assume…?

Molotes- Midtown Global Market’s Andy’s Garage

Deep-fried corn masa empanadas with choice of fillings: Chipotle Style is filled with shredded chipotle chicken and topped with chipotle sour cream, cotija cheese and fresh cilantro; and Elote Style is topped with mayo, cotija cheese and Tajin seasoning (can be prepared vegan). (Gluten-free) (Available Aug. 25-30 only)

Sarah

Huh. I don’t know what these are. Let’s find out!

Oh, they’re an empanada. Okay. That doesn’t immediately rule it out. It’s all gonna depend on their full deal (what’s in them, what they taste like.)

Oh fuck.

Oh shit.

No no no.

Chipotle style or Elote style?

Why? WHY?? Packie…what did we do to deserve this??

Shit. I guess if I have to try one of these, I’m leaning toward the elote one, which I’m sure will piss Packie off. Either way, I’m very sure I won’t like them. Through no fault of their own. It’s gonna come down to the opinions of Anne and Packie on whether they’re good or not. I can’t be objective here.

Also, I know Andy’s Garage isn’t new, but I can’t remember what they offered before…

(I’d still rather eat each one of these on their own by myself than eat that breakfast food from before.)

Patrick

Here is the other vendor for Midtown Global Market, available during the first half of the fair.  This is the same place that gave us one of those rare gems of an F ranked food last year.  Doesn’t instill much hope this year will be different.  Here we have a Molete, which is a deep-fried corn masa that is usually stuffed with stuff.  It comes in a shredded chipotle chicken variety and an elote style.  Sarah and I are not fans of elote, so hopefully we can agree to try the chicken one, but even then, this just doesn’t sound terribly interesting to me.  Not sure how much of that is the venue, probably a fair amount, but not sure I’d be excited for this even if it was coming from somewhere else.  I suppose I’ll just hope it’s not entirely a waste of money like last year and that I don’t regret trying it.

Anne

Well look who’s back after receiving an F last year- Andy’s Garage. Let’s see wtf they’re up to this year.

Molotes are just like a corn-pastry-pocket thing. I, of course, like the sound of the elotes one, but we know how Sarah and Packie are going to feel about that.

I’ve never had Molotes- is the outer pocket supposed to be that thick?

Knowing how Andy’s Garage did last year I’m preeeeeetty suss that these will be not great.

Mov + Nqaji (Rice + Meat)- Union Hmong Kitchen

Purple sticky rice with choice of sauce, including Krunchy Chili Oil (dried Thai chilis, garlic, shallots), Lemongrass Scallion Dressing (lemongrass, ginger, garlic, shallots), and Tiger Bite (Thai chilis, garlic, shallots, cilantro, fish sauce, oyster sauce, lime juice); plus, choice of skewered and grilled meat, including Hmong Sausage (house-made coarse-ground pork sausage link with Kruncy Chili Oil), Hilltribe Chicken Thigh (ginger, lemongrass), or Lemongrass Turmeric Tofu (marinated in a lemongrass and turmeric blend). (All items gluten-free; vegan options available) (New Vendor)

Sarah

Rice? Good. Meat? Good. Hmong Food? Goooooooood.

Okay, I AM a bit bummed that this is just, like, a Hmong lunch or dinner. Which, I mean, will be great for people who have never tried Hmong food before to discover what they’re missing (only good things, btws) but it’s a lot for a day at the fair.

But shit I love that sticky purple rice. And I love Hmong sausage. And their chicken. And I love that we get a choice of dipping sauces, too!

Also, this is furthering the vegan and sausage/hot dog theme all at once.

Oh wait! Tofu is an option! Maybe we’ll try that one instead.

Hands down, I know this will be great. But because I eat this pretty regularly in our day-to-day life, I can’t say I’m, like, fair excited for it.

Though I am excited for people who haven’t had Hmong food to try it.

Patrick

Here we have another entry from the new vendor Union Hmong Kitchen.  Mov + Nqaij, which based on the title I assume translates to Rice + Meat, which is a good combo.  The food item comes with the classic Hmong purple sticky rice which is a must have when eating delicious Hmong cuisine, and a choice between three “meats” and three sauces.  I say “meat” because one is tofu, but I think that is like the vegan’s meat.  They still have to hunt it down and slaughter it, but the tofu feels no pain and isn’t sentient, so it is more humane.  The other options are a seasoned chicken thigh or a Hmong Sausage.  Personally, I’d go for the sausage, it is a delicious and interesting variety if you’ve never tried Hmong sausage.  Not sure how we’ll decide on a sauce, and I’m going to hope I can get away with just asking to try all 3, which is a real chore for my usually non-intrusive Minnesotan self.  Nothing particularly groundbreaking about this one, but I’m interested to give a try, and some of these sauces sound like they could really kick things up a notch.  Krunchy Chili Oil is just damn good and could go on almost anything, lemongrass scallion dressing is also a fantastic sauce, and Tiger Bite sounds spicy but has some intrigue components.  Crossing my fingers this will be a good one.

Anne

YUSSSSSS ALL THE HMONG FOOD

Ok this looks great bc I already like Hmong Food.

But because I already like Hmong food this doesn’t seem super surprising or exciting as a result?

But I like that you can choose your choice of meat OR tofu! Gonna be hard to decide between the sausage, chicken thigh, or tofu- all three sound great.

Maybe it’ll be so good that we have to go back for 2nd and 3rds and try all three

New Mexico Chile Dog Sliders Two Ways- Blue Moon Dine-In Theater

Green chile and red chile – made with roasted-on-site New Mexico Hatch chiles and a hint of chorizo pork, topped with queso-style cheese and red onion, served over all-beef hot dogs on slider buns. Comes with a prickly pear cactus slushie shooter on the side.

Sarah

Dammit.

I don’t want Chile dogs.

I want hot dogs, but not with Chiles on them. And not with two kinds of chiles, either, so I have to try them twice.

Add another to the sausage/hot dog theme.

Shit, there’s a hint of chorizo pork, too? Chorizo is my least favorite sausage. It’s dry, folks. And not very good.

It’s fun that it comes with the prickly pear slushy shooter, though. I’m excited about that. And not mad about the nacho cheese. I’m sure Anne’s practically dancing at the thought of those red onions, too.

But mostly I wish this admittedly cool idea of hotdog sliders wasn’t ruined with chiles.

Oh fuck, it’s Blue Moon?

Dammit. I love Blue Moon. Well, at least that means the slushie will probably be great.

Patrick

Hey, looks like we have a second entry for Blue Moon this year.  Well, better them than someone who doesn’t deserve to even be on the list (*Cough* Hideaway Speakeasy *Cough*).  Here we have some New Mexico Chile Dog Sliders two ways and HOT DAMN, this is what I’m talking about.  I’m…not exactly sure is these also qualify as “Chili” dogs?  In addition to roasted hatch chiles there is a hint of chorizo pork in the chile portion, so does that make it Chili?  I don’t know, maybe I’m over thinking it.  Point is, I am so on board for this, they look amazing and I love chiles (as long as they don’t start a flash fire going down and coming out) and I love chili dogs, so this HAS to be great.  I-It just has to!  Oh my god, and it comes with an effing prickly pear cactus slushie?  Just casually throw that in there?  Delightful.  If nothing else, they don’t’ shortchange you on quantity and variety with this order.

Anne

Ok so at a glance I thought this was going to be a dessert, and then saw it’s actually chili dogs?! Well what’s that pink stuff with the straw??

Oh Shit- just realized they’re CHILE dogs, not CHILI dogs.

Hmmm

Ok so the pink thing is a prickly pear shooter on the side.

Alright, sign me up for that.

Also I like the idea of slider hotdogs- look at how cute those effers look.

But I do not want chiles, and I don’t like chorizo (even if it’s just a hint of it).

I hate how cute this is.

Goddamnit

Nordic Waffles- Belly Full Nordic Waffle and Vanilla Dream Nordic Waffle- Nordic Waffles

Two new fresh-made waffle sandwiches: Belly Full is a spring onion-infused Nordic Waffle filled with sous vide seasoned pork belly with coleslaw and locally made jalapeno jam; Vanilla Dream is a Nordic Waffle coated with cinnamon and sugar and filled with Norwegian vanilla custard cream.

Sarah

All right! Time to see what Nordic Waffles is offering us this year! (BRING BACK THE PEBLLES AND BAM BAM!!)

Oh shit. I want that Belly Full one right now. RIGHT FRICKIN NOW.

Everything about that sounds great! Omg why am I not eating it yet?

And, I mean, the ice cream one sounds fine, though not very special, but it’s rare that I say “get outta my way, ice cream!”

I need the meats.

Patrick

God, enough with the two new food items listed in one entry!  I mean, sure it wouldn’t be any different if you listed them separately, I just…there is so much new damn food this year.  38 items, but it feels like half of those have two, three, or more varieties when you dig into them.  I am gonna be deadass broke after day one.  Really might need to look into this Patreon idea to get people to pay to watch me eat food.  Anyways, Nordic Waffles is a great stand and has some really fun and tasty waffle sandwich varieties.  This year they’ve added a Belly Full sandwich which is a spring-onion infused Nordic Waffle filled with sous vide seasoned pork with coleslaw and jalapeno jam, and a Vanilla Dream sandwich with the waffled coated with cinnamon and surgar and filled with Norwegian custard cream.  The Belly full sounds fine, and it’s neat that they’ve started incorporating new things into the waffle itself in addition to changing the fillings.  Sounds like this will be a mix between sweet, spicy, and savory, so it could be a nice addition.  However, I am all there for that Vanilla Dream sandwich!  Daaaaamn that sounds amazing.  I love a good custard-filled whatever, and sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar, this just looks like a wonderful, sweet treat.  Can’t wait for this one.

Anne

Ok Nordic Waffles, knock our socks off.

Ho heck

These sound great.

Onion forward Pork Belly? Om nom yes please. I hope the jalapeno jam is not too spicy or overwhelming

Cinnamon Sugar Wafflle filled with Norwegian Custard Cream. Hells yes. I wonder what Norwegian Custard Cream is like- what sets it apart from other custards. I don’t know but I’m looking forward to finding out.

Nordic Waffles is a good bet, especially when they have items that are actually eat-able (and not like an entire bone-in fried chicken leg in a waffle).

Pickle Pizza- Rick’s Pizza

Hand-tossed homemade pizza dough topped with homemade specialty dill ranch sauce, fresh mozzarella and crunchy dill pickles, and finished with dill weed seasoning. (New Vendor)

Sarah

I’M PICKLE RIIIIICK!

Anyway, pickle pizza.

I’m surprised this hasn’t been done before. It seems so obvious, and yet, here we are.

I don’t know that the ranch needs to be Dill ranch when we have literal dill pickles on the pizza itself.

But, hell, this definitely falls into my “I’ll try anything once,” category.

Will it be good? No clue. I hope it is.

You know what? I’m saying it. I’m actually pretty excited about this one. It’s something different and exciting.

Oh, Rick’s Pizza is a new vendor, too. Well, all right. I hope you delight and surprise me, Rick.

Patrick

I’m Pickle Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiick!  Come on, really missed an opportunity on the name here.  Another new vendor this year is Rick’s Pizza and they’re coming out bold with a pickle pizza.  I mean holy hell, could they have crammed any more dill pickle flavors into a single pizza?  I think I’ve tried burger pizzas before that had pickles as a topping and it really didn’t do much for me.  Is the solution to go full pickle and commit to that sour pickle palate?  Not sure I agree.  They’ve got all the pickle seasonings, a dill flavored ranch sauce, and more pickles on top than pepperoni on a pepperoni lovers pizza (which is never enough pepperoni).  I’m predicting I won’t enjoy this, and I’m a guy who really likes pickles.

Anne

Is this another new vendor? Are we doing something different with the new vendors where they’re not at the bottom of the list anymore?

Well hey

A pizza offering not from Green Mill (wait- I hope Green Mill is still on this list somewhere).

I sort of like the idea of just getting a slice of pizza?

And I also like how they went ALL IN on the pickle aspect of this-

Dill Ranch? Check

Dill Pickles? Check

Dill Weed Seasoning? Check

Though I feel like pickles won’t be crunchy after baking so that seems like a stretch.

I don’t know if I will like this pizza, but I am intrigued and ready to try it

Pink Guava Slushie- Holy Land

Frozen slushie drink made with juice squeezed from fresh pink guavas.

Sarah

Ope, Holy Land is giving us a drink. They already have a drink there that I like (what is it, you ask? Hell if I know. I’m drawing a complete blank at this moment. It might be some sort of lemonade? Anne would know for sure.)

Nothing that special here, being as that it’s just a fruit slushie, but I’m okay with that. I’ve never had a guava slushie before and I’m ready to try it.

It’s nice when some of the new foods are drinks, too.

Holy Land is a favorite, so I’m sure this will be just fine.

Patrick

Got a second new item from Holy Land too.  Just a drink here, so I’ll give them a pass on taking up two spots on the new food list.  Seems pretty simple, a frozen slushie drink made with pink guava juice.  I love a good slushie and the flavor sounds fun, so hopefully this will make a refreshing break while I enjoy one of Holy Land’s gyro meat on a stick.  One might say I…guava have it.  See what I did there? I got to have it because I got to try all the new foods and I have no choice.  I’m not joking, this is serious.

Anne

Ooh, another fun beverage. And nice that it’s at Holy Land so we can get it when we pick up the Chicken Tandoori Rolls.

Not much to say about this- slushie made from guavas. Looks good. Nuff said.

Omghowisthisliststillgoing?? What are there like 40 offerings this year??!

Pork Schnitzel Sandwich- Minnesota Farmers Union Coffee Shop

Breaded and deep-fried Minnesota pork loin topped with pickled cabbage and served with mustard mayo on a toasted bun.

Sarah

Hmm.

I have serious doubts about anything that comes from the Farmer’s Union. So, on the surface, this seems like it should be fine. But, I dunno that it can be…

It looks hella good, though. And I do like schnitzel…

Okay, I’m gonna be generous. Farmer’s Union? I am excited for this. Please don’t let me down like you did with the Kernza thing a few years back, or whatever drink it was last year that required us to chew.

Shit, I think I need to take a lunch break. I’m getting hella hungry up in here.

One good thing about the new foods releasing SO FRICKIN LATE this year is that at least I have fewer weeks before I get to try all of this.

Patrick

Oh god, not these guys again.  Farmer’s Union has a running tally of fighting over whether they a C-ranked or D-ranked establishment.  Frankly, not sure how last year’s nightmare elixir that was cucumber jalapeno limeade didn’t rank them an F spot, where they decided all people want in a drink is to chew more pulp.  This year they went food item again since they were tired of blowing it so hard on abysmal drinks and went for a pork schnitzel sandwich.  At a glance, it looks like a serviceable sandwich, but often their stuff photographs well and then calls it quits there.  You got some pickled cabbage, and a mustard mayo sauce, and yeah, just a basic bitch pork sandwich.  Not sure it even looks entirely breaded, like maybe lightly breaded, which is more of a pork cutlet than actual schnitzel.  Bet it’s like tiny too.  I predict a C for this, or maybe Farmer’s Union will go for the turkey and get three D’s in a row this year.  Either way, we all strikeout.

Anne

Well- a savory food item from MFUCS- is that a first? (just checked- yes)

This vendor has never gotten higher than a C with us, so maybe this pivot will be good for them?

I like schnitzel

I like the idea of schnitzel on a sammich

Mustard mayo and toasted bun? Ok!

If this was at any other vendor I would be excited, but I feel like I’m just waiting for the MFUCS to mess this up somehow

HALF WAY DOOOOOOONE!
